Woven Ribbon Headband - 4th Of July Hairstyle
Time to go buy some red, white, and blue ribbon, girls. I spent $1.50 on ribbon this week at Walmart and it's been completely worth it. We've had lots of fun coming up with hairstyles for the 4th of July!!
I was inspired by one of our readers with this idea and this hairdo is now one of our new favorites!
Here is a video tutorial for this style:
Or if you would rather follow along in pictures..........
To start, make a french braid headband. You can do a regular french braid or a dutch braid, it doesn't matter. Just make sure to make the part far enough back on her head to give you some room for the ribbon. Also, only take hair from one side (the front) when you're braiding.
Braid down as far as you can and tie off with an elastic. If you don't already have one, pick up one of these plastic needles while you're at Walmart too. For another $1.50, you'll be glad you did!
Depending on the size of your daughter's head, your pieces of ribbon will need to be about 2 - 3 feet long, each. I've found it's usually better to go a little bit longer than you think. You can always trim it later if you need to.
Thread your ribbon through the needle and you're ready to start weaving the headband.
I just tried to follow my sections from the french braid as I sewed the ribbon in. Alternate going under a section of hair, then over a section of hair all the way across her head.
I remember Babes In Hairland doing something similar awhile back with a cute Valentines Day Do. If you like this concept, you should go check out that style too.
Here's what the first ribbon will look like. At this point, you may need to tug on the ribbon a little on either side to get the ends even.Repeat the process with your other 2 ribbons. Just make sure to weave the middle section through the hair the opposite way. (If you started going under a section of hair the first time, go over instead and vice versa.)Take the ends of the ribbons on both sides (and the end of the braid) and tie them all together underneath her hair in the back with an elastic. If you want, you can add a cute flower clip to one side.
Oh, and don't mind the lovely non-matching pj's! She has the cutest red, white and blue outfit to match, but we didn't feel like putting it on just for the picture. We'll save that for the real 4th of July. :)
