Rainbow Bun - Dance Bun With Ribbon

Ballet Bun With Ribbon

Here's a cute and unique hairstyle variation on the standard Ballet Bun from the other day.

hairstyle for dance
I thought this "Rainbow Bun" would be a cute hairstyle for a dance competition or recital. I could also see it working for gymnastics or even a Renaissance Fair.

Christmas Hairstyle - Easy

We've had a request for an EASY and quick Holiday Hairstyle that doesn't involve french braiding. I think this one should be doable for everyone!
Christmas Hairstyle Start by making 3 sections in the front.
This step is optional: Make a pull though going towards the top of her head with each of the side sections.
Now thread a ribbon through the elastic on each of the side sections and make sure the ends are the same length. (It may be easier for you to thread the ribbons through the elastics before you do the pull throughs.)
Take the ribbons and wrap them around the ponytails on each side. Then add both side ponytails in with the ponytail in the middle.
Add a cute Christmasy bow and you are done!

The Princess thought this hair style would be cute with a candy cane bow. I agree! We might make one IF we get some extra time before Christmas.

Holiday Hairstyle

This would be a cute Christmas hairstyle, a holiday party hairstyle, or for any time. You could just change up the colors of the ribbons in the braids for your occasion. This really isn't difficult or as time consuming as it looks either. You just need to know how to french braid. See the "how to" video below.....
Holiday Hairstyle As a side note, this Christmas hairstyle would work on short or long hair. If your hair is long enough for a small french braid, you're good to go. And... can you believe how long her hair is getting? It grew back out after her hair cut quicker than I thought it would.Christmas Hairstyle with braids

These "Christmas ribbon cornrows" held up pretty well. We actually kept this holiday hair style in for several days! A Christmas bonus. :)

2 Strand Ribbon French Braid - Easy

I think this has to be the easiest french braid ever! So, those of you who have trouble braiding (especially french braiding).... give this one a try. You might surprise yourself! :)
french braid I actually stumbled upon how to make this braid accidentally. I started out with a completely different idea and it just kind of turned into this. Now it's one of our favorite hairstyles. Love it when that happens! french twist braid with ribbon Here's the hairstyle video tutorial: It really is simple! Only 2 strands to work with and no braiding skills involved. Only twisting and wrapping.....
I've found that strips of fabric or thick/soft ribbon work best to create this braid. I'm thinking this would be a darling Christmas hairstyle with some red/green ribbons or Christmas fabric. You could even add in some holly or other Christmas decor if you wanted to.

Ribbon Braid Design - Scunci Design Weaver

So, we recently got a new "hairstyling toy" from Hair Flair Boutique called the Design Weaver (made by Scunci.) The package includes a hair weaving tool (similar to a plastic needle) and 4 colored ribbons that look a lot like tulle or netting, but glide smoothly through braids and hair.

The weaving tool that comes in this package is nice because the eye is much larger than a regular craft needle (making it easier to thread hair and ribbons through.) If you wanted to do something like this woven basket hairstyle or this quick woven ponytail the weaving tool would really come in handy. :)

These aren't available in stores yet and can only be purchased online. If you click here: Design Weaver it will take you to Amazon, where they are available to purchase.
scunci design weaverAs you can see, we've been having lots of fun with this! This wrapped around french braid ribbon design is just one of many hairstyles we've created using this new tool. The Princess has asked for ribbons in her hair almost every day since we got our design weaver package! We'll probably be posting a few more hairstyles we have done with this in the near future, but I won't bore you with all of them. Lets just say, the possibilities are endless! wrap around french braidThis kind of reminds me of a hairstyle you might see at a renaissance faire or festival. renaissance braiding A fun, colorful, princessy version of a side swept ribbon french braid.....renaissaince hairstyle And this is a more elegant, sophisticated, subtle version of basically the same hairstyle......
elegant ribbon braid We also did a french braid going up the back of her head (with the black ribbon) and a messy bun for church. It was gorgeous, but unfortunately I didn't take any pics that day. Anyway, just an idea if you wanted something more elegant or an updo for a teen or tween.

Picture Day Hairstyle

Ok, this hairstyle isn't anything new, unique, or extra special. ;) But, we've had lots of inquires lately about suggestions for hairstyles for picture day. So, I thought I would show you what we did for our picture day hairdo this year, just for an idea.

These pictures were quickly taken as we literally ran out the door for school. :) Kind of a last minute thing, ya know?
picture day hairdo This hairdo reminds me a little of this hairstyle by Jenn, which I adore. This would be the picture day/ short version of that one!
braided hair style for pictures As you can see, it's just a square on top of her head, divided into 3 sections. I french braided the back 2 sections and then added the "bangs" into the elastic with the braid in the front. Next, I sewed in the ribbon with our trusty craft needle. And lastly, added a few flat iron curls.
school pictures hairstyle I usually like to leave her hair mostly down for pictures. And something fairly simple/classic as well. Hopefully she won't look back on this picture years from now and hate her hair. LOL I have a few pics from my school days (as I'm sure some of you do as well) with really, really awful hair! We're talking huge bangs, etc. hehehe
hairstyle for picturesHere are a few more hairstyles we've done for school pictures in years past for more ideas: picture day hair 1picture day hair 2picture day hair 3 So, I'm curious. Have you already had your school pictures taken this year? What did you do for the hair style?? Or what do you plan on doing, if it's still coming up?

Fake French Ribbon Braid Video

We posted this quick and easy "fake" french ribbon braid quite awhile ago, but recently had a request to make a video tutorial on it. So, here you go.

This is one of our favorite cheats. :)

This is our short hair version (shown in the video) with double braids on top....
double french braids
And here are a few more hairstyle ideas I dug up from older posts for you using this same technique:A headband ribbon braid.... french ribbon braid One single french ribbon braid down the middle....
ribbon hairstyle for girls And, a single braid using thinner ribbon. (FYI, we've found this holds together better if the ribbon is a little thicker.)
ribbon braiding
Have fun with this hairdo!
Btw, it's the last day to enter the topsy tail contest if you haven't already. I will post the 3 winners on our giveaway blog and on facebook after I draw them either late tonight or in the morning (depending on when I find the time.)

5 Strand Ribbon Braid

5 strand braidIs it just me? I love seeing ribbons in hairstyles for little girls!multi strand ribbon braid Some of you may have already tried the 5 strand braid that we posted awhile back. This is just a fun way to spice it up a bit. I've also noticed it helps to add ribbons to a braid when you're working with hair that is on the thinner side. The ribbons make the braid look and feel thicker.

Enjoy!

Ribbon Star Hairstyle

Another fun star hairstyle for the Fourth of July (or anytime of course.) This is a 5 minute hairdo, quick and easy! No french braiding skills required. This hairstyle should work well on short hair too. Maybe even a hairdo for a baby or toddler?
Feel free to watch the video for a step by step tutorial.

Here's what it will look like when you're done.......

We did this another day and took larger sections of hair for a slightly different look. If you're working with super short hair, you'll want to stick with the version above.

Patriotic Ribbon Cornrows

Here's a fun and quick hairstyle for the Fourth of July that will work with short hair or long.
Ribbon criss-crossed cornrows!
colorful cornrows I didn't take a ton of step by step pics of the braiding because we've done several tutorials on this hair blog using these crossed cornrows before and I didn't want to bore you with the instructions again!

I made a diagonal square on top of her head, split it in half length-wise and then again width-wise (forming 4 sections.) I then started braiding at the front left corner until I got to the end of the row and crossed the braid over to the bottom right and continued the frenchbraid to the end of that row. I finished up by braiding the front right section and crossed it over to the bottom left.
criss cross corn rows Using our plastic craft needle, I sewed some ribbon onto the cornrows starting at the end of the braid (at the elastic) and up to the top of the braid........
Then back down to the elastic......
Same thing on the other braid......
With the extra ends of ribbon, I just wrapped them around the braid and tucked them underneath and behind the elastic. The Princess thought these ribbon X's looked a bit like little stars in her hair!
4th of july star hair This really was fairly quick! It took about 5 minutes to make the little cornrows and another 2 to add the ribbon.
cute hairstyle for little girls We even had time for curls!
