French Fish Braid Hairstyle, Side Swept

The Sideways Fishtail Braid

We posted a picture of this side swept french fish bone braid here on our blog and on one of our hairstyle ideas videos on Youtube awhile ago. Since then we have received request after request for a video tutorial. Well, here we are almost 2 years later finally getting around to it! :)

This unique looking hairdo is actually pretty easy and uncomplicated (although it is a little more time consuming than a regular french braid.) It also takes a bit to get used to making the braid sideways instead of up and down.

sideways french fish braid
french fishtail braidFor me, this braid is easier to make with wet hair (since the princess's hair is naturally so straight and tends to get flyaways while dry.) But, depending on the hair texture you are working with, you may want to try it dry. If you have naturally curly hair, this would look adorable done with a more tousled, dry, beachy, look. Just do what works best for you!

Btw, did you notice the adorable headband and flower accessories in these hairstyle pictures? I'm participating in a 3 part series of posts called "Mums The Word-But I Just Gotta Tell Ya" for All Things Ribbon. The fun mom (Jen) over at AllThingsRibbon.com sent myself and 2 of my hair blogging friends (Girly Dos and Babes In Hairland) these darling mums. Each of us are taking a day to post a hairstyle using her adorable creations! I can't wait to see what the other 2 hair bloggers come up with and will add links from this post when they get their hairstyles up so that you can see them too! You may also want to join All Things Ribbon on Facebook where you can keep up with Jen's latest creations and great deals!!

French Fishbraid Options

Ever since we did this french fishtail/herringbone/fishbone braid (whatever you call it) the Princess has asked for it again and AGAIN!

So, here are a couple of variations we've done this past week. I didn't do any step by step pics, they're pretty self explanatory. Enjoy braiding those fishies!

First up: A fish swept across the back.....

And since we've had some requests, we've added a video tutorial for this hairdo, enjoy:

French Fish Braid Video

Someone on our Facebook Page (thank you Brandi) found and posted this hairstyle and was wondering how to do it. If you want to see the original version of what I was trying to recreate here, you can go to our facebook page and look under the "fan photos" to see it. I didn't dare post the picture on our blog because I'm not sure if it's under copyright or whatever. :) Anyway, I think it's adorable and HAD to try it out.

I did this with wet hair. I'm thinking if you want it more tousled looking (like the picture) dry hair would probably work better. Or, if you're lucky enough to be working with naturally curly hair, even better!
fish braidBtw, the princess is really into flowers right now. We got this adorable one from Pomegranate and Pink. I think it gives this hairstyle just the right finishing touch.

So, here's the french fish video. Basically you begin with 2 sections and start the same way you do a regular fish tail (taking a small piece from one side and crossing it to the other.) Then, after the first two pieces have been crossed, you continue with this same pattern, just taking your pieces from the sides instead of from the original sections the rest of the way down. That didn't make sense, did it? ;) I think if you can figure out how to get this started, the rest will be a cinch!
Thanks for sharing the cute idea with us, Brandi!

Fishtail /Fishbone Braid Video

I had a request a couple days ago for a fish tail braid video. I knew I had already posted one, so I went looking through this hair blog trying to find the link. Well, I looked all over and couldn't find it. Weird!! It has been awhile, but I remembered making that video! Long story short, I finally found it in my drafts. Yep, I'm losing it people. I made the video, then never posted it! Here it is, the long lost tutorial. Better late than never, right?

How to make a Fish Braid:
I love that this braid is so easy to make but looks so intricate and unique.

Also, one last thing. This has been bugging me. In your expert opinions, is it fish tail braid, herringbone, or fish bone braid?? I don't know which is "right."

3 Fishtail Braids Hairstyle For Girls

Another hairstyle from the summer in the middle of winter! Notice the fun summer dress and the TAN!! (Well, as tan as a fair skinned blue eyed little girl can get.)

Start with a basic low ponytail and do a pull-through. (If you don't know how to do a pull through, look under my "quick search labels" for "videos." You'll find an instructional video there!)

Split the pony into 3 sections and do fish braids in each one. (Or any other type of braid.)
Combine the 3 braids into one at the bottom and make a little loop out of the ends by not pulling the hair all the way through the elastic. Take the braids and push the ends through the hole at the top of the pony and pin with a couple of crossing bobby pins.
I remember my husband saying something about her looking like "Polyanna" at this point. Was that a compliment or an insult?
If you want, add a bow.
See, I told you she was tanish! I can't wait for warm weather again......

Ponytail With A Fish Bone Braid

I love these braids, they look really neat, and are so easy to do. Start by making a ponytail. Then, instead of taking 3 sections of hair like a traditional braid, make 2 sections. Take a small piece of hair from the outside of one of the sections and cross it over to the other side. Continue to repeat this step, alternating sides all the way down. That's all there is to it! I ended up making a fishtail braid video if you need it.

Here's a close-up of the braid.............

And, the front view.................
