Taylor Swift Hairstyle - "Love Story" Updo

Taylor Swift curly updo hairstyle from the music video "Love Story"

The Princess is a big fan of Taylor Swift's music. We happened to see her Love Story video and of course fell in love with her hairstyle in the video! We've been wanting to try it for awhile and finally got around to it this weekend.

At first I tried to place the headband underneath her hair that is swept up and twisted on the sides. (The same way Taylor Swift's hair is in the video.) Well, the headband kind of got lost under all of those curls and was barely visible. :)
So, we ended up moving the headband on top of the hair and more towards the front of her head where it could be seen.

I'm loving this vintage princessy look! Of course, it doesn't look exactly like Taylor Swifts hair, but pretty darn cute either way.
I could see this working for a wedding hairstyle for the bride or flower girl. Or maybe a hairstyle for prom or other dance.

To complete this style, you will need:

Naturally curly hair...... or some curlers or curling iron.
An elastic
Several Bobby pins
A headband, ribbon or other accessory for some added sparkle. (In case you are wondering, we purchased our headband at regular old Walmart. I believe it was made by Goody.)

New Years Eve Updo

This New Years Eve hairstyle is actually from last year. I love it so much that I had to post it again!

A fancy schmancy updo for a special occasion. Maybe a New Years party, or even a flower girl hairstyle! She actually wanted a princessy type hairdo to go with her cute new Christmas dress.

Make the parts first. We did one section in the front for her "bangs." One across the back going from ear to ear. And four diagonal sections going from the front to the back part. Put each section in a temporary ponytail to keep everything separated.

Slick down the bangs and secure them above her ear with a clear elastic. Then, do some kind of a french braid in each of the four diagonal sections. We did french twist braids. If you don't know how to do that, we have a video tutorial at the bottom of this post.Place the finished braids up out of the way and pull the remaining hair into a ponytail. I did an upside down pull through in the ponytail to add a little volume.Next, gather all the braids directly underneath the ponytail and secure with an elastic. (You should now have 2 ponytails on top of each other.)Curl all the hair in the 2 ponytails.Now, to make the ponytail a little fancier: There is no exactness to this part. Just grab little sections of hair and sort of loop them around and secure them to her head with either bobby pins or little claw clips like this......Do as many sections as you want to. I think we ended up using five clips total. All done!
This sweet little dress came from "Madison Browne" via a blog contest on This Mom Can Shop. It was one of her favorite Christmas presents this year! She looked just like a little princess with her fancy hairstyle and dress.

Funky Twist Fan Hairstyle

This fun and funky updo hairstyle is one of our new favs because it brings lots of attention and compliments, but takes less than 5 minutes to complete (for real.) We're going to be loving 5 minute hairstyles at our house when school starts here in a couple of weeks. Gah, can't believe it's back to school time already! Can you?
Did I mention this hairstyle is super easy too? Not much to it at all! Just make a standard ponytail then take small sections of hair in the ponytail and twist them up. Secure the twisted pieces, leaving out some ends at the top with a clip. The clips we use are "Goody" brand and hold really well. They even held up to the monkey bars, we tested them!! We've tried using some other "cheap clips" and trust me, it's worth spending a little extra to get some that are actually going to stay in.
So anyway, no rhyme or reason to this. Place the twists wherever you would like until all of the hair in the ponytail is used up. Shoulder length hair is perfect for this style. If you're working with longer hair, you can twist the pieces up more until they start to coil to shorten them up a bit. (Similar to the twists we used in this flower girl hairstyle.) You could also do a variation of this style with a half pony instead, or leave some hair down in the ponytail if you wanted to. After you get all the hair twisted, you can spike the ends out with some hairspray or gel. It really helps if you're working with wet hair.


On our facebook page I recently asked which type of hair tutorials you all prefer (video or photo) and the response was mixed. So, I guess we'll just keep doing what we're doing and throw in a little of both (depending on the style.) Since this was a quick hairdo, we had time to make a video tutorial for all of you youtube lovers as well. Yay! :)

Sarah Michelle Gellar Inspired Boho Hairstyle

We love the Bohemian Braid hairstyles that are so popular right now. The Princess has requested several "Boho Braid" hairdos we've seen around. But I've had a hard time finding many that will work with her new bob haircut.

Then, we saw this bohemian braided hairstyle on Sarah Michelle Gellar and decided we might be able to make it work...


I didn't make our braids as messy or tossled looking though. I've found that when I try to make things "messy cute" it usually just turns out looking MESSY and not so cute lol. If you want your braids to look more like Sarah's, try braiding textured hair when it's dry, and keep it loose.

So you start by making an inside-out french braid on both sides of her head, in the front. And tie each braid off with an elastic.
Then add some loose curls in the back, for texture. I just used our curling iron and some hairspray to create these curls.
Next I took the top section of the curls (not neatly, just use your hands and kind of grab a section like you are making a half pony) and bring the braids underneath, tying them together with an elastic at the back. As you can see, we barely had enough length to join the two braids together...
Now bring the hair from the top loosely together into a half pony over the braids and add an elastic. Don't worry about making it perfect looking.
We obviously don't have enough length in the back to create a traditional messy bun. So, I just pulled random pieces of hair up and pinned them into place with crossed bobby pins....
There is no exactness to this part. Just keep grabbing chunks of hair and pinning them until you are happy with it! Don't even worry about the bobby pins showing either. It adds to the cuteness in my opinion.
So anyway, here is the end result of our improvised messy bun for short hair!
I really should have taken a picture of this hair style at the end of the day. It ended up looking so cute after she had been playing. It just got cuter and cuter as it loosened up and got messed up a bit.

Another Special Occasion/ Easter Updo Hairstyle

Start with a pony, leaving out an edge of hair all the way around her head. Start inside out french braiding at the bottom of her head, (underneath the ponytail) and go all the way around. When you get to the end of the french braid, keep braiding and bring the end of the braid up the back of her head and combine it in with the ponytail. (If you don't know how to do an inside out french braid, click on the link. You'll find an instructional video there!)I didn't show the next steps in pictures because there really is no exact science to it. I just made some loops of hair with about 1/3 of the hair in the ponytail (the same way I did this Easter style.) I bobby pinned the loops to her head this time instead of using elastics. Then, I randomly braided some pieces and kinda strung them up through the loops and secured them to her head with the little clips. The last step was curling all the ends.

The thing I've found with updos is- it's going to work out differently every time. Just kind of work with the hair until you get it looking the way you want it to. Sometimes I use bobby pins, sometimes I use elastics, sometimes I use clips, sometimes the hair needs to be curled, sometimes it doesn't. (You get the idea.) It's all just a crap shoot!! So, just use the basic ideas from these updo posts, then make your very own creation for the end result!
I was thinking this would be a cute hairstyle for a flower girl too. Or maybe even the prom! (Although I can't be sure about that one, LOL. I'm WAY too old and out of it to know what's in with that scene, KWIM!?!) An Easter Dress And Fancy Easter Hair !

A Fancy Princess Updo!

Begin by making a ponytail, leaving out about an inch and a half of hair all the way around.Now make sections in the hair you left out all the way around her head. Make the parts however you want them. I did some triangle type thingys, but regular squares would work great too.Split each section in half.Take 2 of the split sections (next to each other) and twist them in the same direction, then combine them, (twisting the opposite direction) to form a small rope braid . (If you don't know how to do a rope braid, click on the link for a video tutuorial.) Do this with each section around her head and combine all the braids together with the ponytail.Take a section from the pony. Bring it up over your fingers to form a loop.Bring the loop in by the base of the pony and wrap an elastic around the whole thing to secure it.Repeat this step with all the hair in the pony, sort of working in a circular pattern. When you're done forming the loops, you'll be left with some ends hanging down. I just kind of wrapped those up and tucked them underneath the bun, then hid it with this cute bow (from All Things Ribbon.)

If you wanted a more casual look, you could use the same concept and just make a regular pony with it instead of the updo.
One of my very favorite things about having a little girl (besides doing her hair) is the whole Easter Dress experience! Every year I get so excited about picking out "The Dress." This year our dress is from "All Things Ribbon" and we both absolutely love it. We've had it hanging around the house for awhile and the princess has been dying to try it on. So, of course even though Easter is weeks away, we had to give it a test run! Then we needed some Fancy Easter Hair to go with it! (Just ignore the lovely colored dead grass in the background.)

Here she is all dressed up. She truly felt and looked like a little princess with this dress on......
