Fourth Of July Hairstyle, Ribbon Headband

We posted this braided ribbon headband a couple of years ago along with a few other hairstyles for the 4th of July and decided we needed to add a video tutorial for you.

Of course, this cute ribbon headband doesn't just have to be for July fourth. You could switch up the colors of the ribbon for any holiday or occasion. The princess requested this hairstyle several times last year for "spirit day" at her school (which is a day where they are supposed to wear their school colors.) I'm thinking this would be a cute hairdo for cheerleading, dance, gymnastics or other sports with her team colors. You could add a ponytail, bun, or pigtails if you would rather have her hair up for a sporting event..
Btw, a lot of you have made requests for video tutorials of many of our older hairstyles. I am working on going back through our hair blog and making some videos. Just keep in mind, it's a slow process. :) Hopefully I will eventually get to all of them.

Letters To Juliet Hairstyle

The Folded Half Ponytail Hairstyle From "Letters To Juliet"

Awhile back (around the time this movie came out) I did a post about some of the cute hairstyles in the movie "Letters To Juliet." This was right after we had cut the princess's hair for Locks Of Love and sadly she didn't have quite enough length to try and recreate any of the hair styles. Well, it has been awhile and her hair has grown quite a bit. Enough in fact that we were able to attempt this cute rolled, twisted and folded half pony!

Here is the original hairstyle on Amanda Seyfried (or Sophie in the movie.) Which I grabbed from the Letters To Juliet Trailer on Youtube.

And here is our attempt at recreating the style: Btw, I need someone to come to my house while we are filming a hairstyle and remind me to take pictures afterwards. Any takers? lol. This is the second time recently that I have forgotten to take a pic and have had to use a screen shot from our video!

So anyway, this is a great hairstyle for moms as well as teens, tweens, and girls. I actually tried this on my own hair when I got home from the movie the night I watched it and have worn it quite a bit since then.... so I've had some practice. I love that this hairdo is quick but still has an elegant look to it.

The Letters To Juliet Hair Tutorial:


As you'll notice while watching the tutorial, I only used 2 bobby pins to create the style. Depending on the thickness and texture of your hair, you may need to use more. This will also depend on the type of bobby pins you are using. We purchased the bobby pins used in this video at a beauty supply store, so they hold a little tighter than the usual cheapy version. You'll probably need to experiment a little and figure out what works best for you!

French Fish Braid Hairstyle, Side Swept

The Sideways Fishtail Braid

We posted a picture of this side swept french fish bone braid here on our blog and on one of our hairstyle ideas videos on Youtube awhile ago. Since then we have received request after request for a video tutorial. Well, here we are almost 2 years later finally getting around to it! :)

This unique looking hairdo is actually pretty easy and uncomplicated (although it is a little more time consuming than a regular french braid.) It also takes a bit to get used to making the braid sideways instead of up and down.


For me, this braid is easier to make with wet hair (since the princess's hair is naturally so straight and tends to get flyaways while dry.) But, depending on the hair texture you are working with, you may want to try it dry. If you have naturally curly hair, this would look adorable done with a more tousled, dry, beachy, look. Just do what works best for you!

Spiral Knot French Braid

This is a fun and unique braid that I sort of figured out on accident! :) We were doing our knotted french braid hairstyle for school one morning and with just a small tweak, it turned into this.......
In case you have forgotten what the original knotted french braid looks like, here it is below: As you can see when you compare these 2 braids, they really don't look the same at all. But as you'll notice in the video... they are made almost the exact same way.
(Sorry about the poor quality of these pics btw. I had pictures of this finished hairdo saved in draft when blogger had it's outage and well, they seem to have disappeared. Of course, I deleted the original pictures off of my card and didn't want to do the hairstyle over. So, I ended up just using a few screen shots of the video for our blog.)

Here's a picture of the back of this hairstyle. We have been loving side ponytails lately and I really like how this braid adds a little something extra to the style.
Another variation we did with this recently: This hair style was made with the same braiding technique shown in the video below. We just added another braid underneath the first one and took smaller sections to bring the "spirals" or "coils" closer together. There are lots of fun variations and hairstyles you could make with this braid.

Surprisingly, this hairstyle only takes a few minutes to complete. You can be out the door for school, work or whatever in 5 minutes or less!

Taylor Swift Hairstyle - "Love Story" Updo

The Princess is a big fan of Taylor Swift's music. We happened to see her Love Story video and of course fell in love with her hairstyle in the video! We've been wanting to try it for awhile and finally got around to it this weekend.

At first I tried to place the headband underneath her hair that is swept up and twisted on the sides. (The same way Taylor Swift's hair is in the video.) Well, the headband kind of got lost under all of those curls and was barely visible. :)
So, we ended up moving the headband on top of the hair and more towards the front of her head where it could be seen.

I'm loving this vintage princessy look! Of course, it doesn't look exactly like Taylor Swifts hair, but pretty darn cute either way.
I could see this working for a wedding hairstyle for the bride or flower girl. Or maybe a hairstyle for prom or other dance.

To complete this style, you will need:

Naturally curly hair...... or some curlers or curling iron.
An elastic
Several Bobby pins
A headband, ribbon or other accessory for some added sparkle. (In case you are wondering, we purchased our headband at regular old Walmart. I believe it was made by Goody.)

Our princess was so thrilled to have matching hair with her favorite singer Taylor Swift! She said this is her favorite hairstyle so far. ;)

How To Make A Messy Bun

A Quick And Easy Messy Bun Hairstyle

Quite honestly, making a messy bun has always been hard for me! I know it sounds dumb because the whole point is that a messy bun is supposed to be effortless. Well, for some reason I've always had a problem making them and have had a hard time finding a technique that will work for me without a lot of struggle.

You may remember we posted a messy bun for long hair quite awhile ago. I'm thinking messy buns are much harder to make with long hair. Ever since the princess got her hair cut, these buns have been much more cooperative for me. :) After some experimenting (and some failures) I think we've finally found a method that seems to work almost every time for us.

Yes, this video is probably not needed for most of you (who I'm sure have been messy bun pros for a long time.) But, if anyone out there struggles with making a messy bun like me... maybe this will help?
Oh, and we found these cute new accessories called Bendini Clips recently. (LOVE them.) They are made by Scunci and come in designs made for little girls as well as teens and adults. These clips can be found online at Hair Flair Boutique (look for "Bendini" on the left sidebar.) I'm not sure if these are available in stores yet or not... I haven't had time to look, but you may be able to find them in stores where Scunci accessories are sold.

Never Ending French Braid Bun

French Braiding, Circular Style

I'm not exactly sure of the "official" name of this braid, or if it even has one. I've seen it done before, but I've never seen the name. So, if you know... please tell us in the comments. :)

We're calling it the Never Ending French Braid Bun because it's hard to tell where the braid starts and where it ends! This could also be called a French Braid crown or a Halo Braid. Well, whatever you want to call it... it's a fun and unique french braid hairstyle that probably isn't done very often!

You could do this hairstyle in several different variations. We actually did a hairstyle using this same concept awhile back in a half ponytail. You can see that one here: Rays of Sunshine Hairstyle.

Or, you could double the braids up and make french braid pigtail buns!
In pigtails, this actually reminds me of a Princess Leia Hairstyle. ;)

Of course if you wanted to, you could add some flowers or ribbons to this hairdo. I think it would be an adorable Hairstyle For Easter Sunday!

Knotted Half Ponytail Hairstyle

Here's another quick and easy hairstyle that can be made using a Flexi Clip.

Half Ponytail Hair Knot

This style literally takes 1 minute to complete! Great for moms, teens, tweens and kids on busy school mornings. I would recommend this hairstyle for long hair or medium length hair.

I think the "hair jewelry" or "flexi clip" gives this hairdo such a pretty, fancy and elegant look. But, if you don't have a flexi clip, you could use a barrette or other accessory to secure the knot. You could even use a regular rubber band if you wanted to.

Just a fun, quick and easy way to spice up a regular old half pony.

Quick Hairstyle | Woven Half Ponytail

A Fancy Half Ponytail

This is the first of several quick and easy hairstyles we'll be posting using a flexi clip. Of course if you don't have a flexi clip, you could accomplish this same woven look with a barrette or a variety of other hair accessories.

This would be a great hairstyle for school mornings since it can be done in under 2 minutes! We just wanted something simple, but unique and pretty at the same time.

I'm thinking this half-up hair style would be cute for teens, tweens, girls and moms. ;) You could maybe even wear this to a dance or other special occasion of you wanted to.

Here's a cute and unique hairstyle variation on the standard Ballet Bun from the other day.


I thought this "Rainbow Bun" would be a cute hairstyle for a dance competition or recital. I could also see it working for gymnastics or even a Renaissance Fair.

The Perfect Ballet Bun

How to make a Ballet Bun

We call this a "Ballerina Bun" or a "Ballet Bun" at our house. I've also heard these buns called Dance Buns, Sock Buns, Donut Buns, Bun Molds, a Chignon, and Figure Skating Buns. I know some people make these with a rolled up sock (hence the name "sock bun") or even with a large scrunchie as a foundation.
We posted a Cinderella hairstyle awhile back, but I'm thinking this bun could also work for a Cinderella or Tinkerbell hairstyle if you are into the Disney Princess thing!
I think most everyone has probably made a bun similar to this at some point. But, I thought I would share the technique and tools that seem to work best for us. This updo hair style literally takes 2 minutes to complete and stays in place very nicely. A perfect hairstyle for dance competitions, recitals, ice skating and other performances. I think it looks professional, sleek, sophisticated, and elegant. :)

This technique can be used on short hair, medium length hair, or long hair. If your hair is super long, you probably don't need to use a bun foundation at all though, as your bun would most likely have enough volume on it's own just by twisting the hair around itself.

St. Patrick's Day Hairdo - Green Eyelet Braid

"Green Eyelet Ribbon French Braid"

We actually posted pictures of this hairstyle last year (without a tutorial) and have had requests for a video ever since.
Weird, but this hair style reminds me of a dress my mom made me when I was a little girl. It had eyelet lace along the bottom with a ribbon sewn or threaded through the lace. :)
By the way, this video tutorial was not so easy to make. :) I was trying to film, thread, sew and keep my hands/arms/head from covering everything up at the same time lol. I couldn't really see what I was doing while I was weaving the ribbon through her hair as you can probably tell by my sloppy sewing job! I think you can get the basic idea of how to make the hairstyle from the video though, just ignore the other "details" k? ;)

Of course, this hairdo would be cute any time... not just on St. Paddy's day. You could change up the color of the ribbons for any occasion!

Woven French Braid Ponytail

French Braiding, Weaving, and Knotting:

This is a fun woven braid ponytail style. I wouldn't say this hairdo is super quick or easy, but definitely unique! An attention getter for sure. :) We haven't had time to do a different hairstyle like this for awhile and had so much fun creating it.

For best results, I would recommend making this hair style with wet hair to help the strands stay smooth while you are braiding the basket weave and tying the knots.

I realize this looks like there is some seriously intricate french braiding and plaiting going on here, but really... this isn't as hard as it looks.
I could see this hairstyle working for a gymnastics meet, a Renaissance Faire, figure skating, dance competitions, or maybe even school of you have an extra 20-30 minutes in the morning lol.

Curling Iron Ringlets

Making Ringlet Curls Using A Curling Iron

We've had some questions regarding how we curl the princess's hair. And.... how we get the curls to stay in.

We actually use several different methods for curling:

Sometimes we braid her hair into cornrows while it's wet, then take the braids out (after the hair has dried) to make a crimped wavy look.

Sometimes we use our flat iron for waves and spirals. We have a video showing how to do that here: How to curl with a flat iron.

Sometimes we use curlers or rollers. I've found that this method seems to hold the curl the best and longest. And I like that no heat is used during the process, but it is time consuming to roll the hair and wait for it to dry.

Most of the time we use our regular old curling iron to make curls.

Our own little curly hairstyle gallery! :) And...Here's our "How To Curl Long Hair With A Curling Iron" video tutorial: For getting the curls to stay in, I usually spray some hairspray on her hair before and after we curl it.... that's it!? Unfortunately I don't have any huge secrets. I think a lot of it has to do with hair texture. Some hair seems to hold curl well, and some just doesn't. You may try experimenting with different hair products if you're having trouble keeping curls in. And of course, if you have any secrets or suggestions for keeping "hard to curl" hair from falling out, please leave a comment under this post for us. You may help someone out! :)

This type of "romantic" heart hairstyle really isn't anything new, but we did add a fun new twist with the way we added the ribbon. I think this turned out to be one of my favorite hearts so far!Here's our video tutorial:

Quick, Easy & Cute Heart Ponytail

Here's a fun Valentine hairstyle that is quick and easy. This one took us 8 minutes and that's including the time it took to curl the pony!

We had a lot of requests for a video back when we first posted this one several years ago (I must have done a really bad job at explaining it lol) so here you are:


And, in case you prefer to follow along by photo: Here's the good old picture tutorial. :)Start by parting out a box in front and do a pull-through. (With or without a topsy tail.)Leaving the end of the pull through out, (you'll need it later to secure the heart.) Make a low pony and do 2 braids with the top half of the hair in the pony.Bring the braids up and position them into the shape of a heart. When you get them the right length on both sides, secure them together with an elastic. You don't want the braids too long or they'll flop around and won't stay put. Also, you need some ends left to add back into the ponytail.At this point, you'll bring the ends from the pony on top down and add them in with the ends of the braids. So, you'll have another elastic over the same place you just put one to tie the 2 braids together, (to secure the heart into place.)Now, add one more elastic at the base of the pony to keep everything together. If you don't make the braids too long, you won't even need anything to help it keep it's shape. I didn't add any bobby pins or anything and it stayed just like this all day!Add a bow if you want. I just used some spare ribbon I had hanging around the house and tied a bow with each piece.

Basket Weave Hairstyle Video

One of our all time favorite hairstyles is the Basket Weave Hairstyle that we posted a couple of years ago. Anytime we make this hairdo, the princess always gets lots of compliments and attention. And... it really is surprisingly easy to make. :)

We've had quite a few requests for a video tutorial and we finally got around to making one!


When we do this hairstyle, I like to make curls with the hair that is left down. It seems to help keep the weaving in place and looks more finished as well. Besides that, what could be cuter than a little girl with ringlets? Here's the video tutorial:
The weaving tool used in this video is part of the Design Weaver Toolkit which can be found at the Hair Flair Boutique.We usually save this hairstyle for special occasions (church, recitals, weddings) it's really beautiful but it's not a hairdo that will hold up very nicely to rough playing or recess/school.
